Glossary: Terms & Definitions
How does induction heating work?
During induction heating eddy currents are induced in an electrically conductive metallic workpiece by an alternating electromagnetic field. These are converted into heat by magnetic loss. Or, simply put, the metal heats up due to the current flow produced in the workpiece. This enables induction heating to introduce heat directly into the workpiece rather than through connectivity from an external source such as heating with a flame or in a furnace.
This process thus achieves a very high degree of efficiency. Additionally, heating can also be accomplished passing through non-conductive materials. The surrounding area is only heated indirectly.
What is the difference between induction brazing and welding?
Brazing is a process in which a filler metal is melted and flowed into a joint to join two or more metal items at a high temperature.
Brazing differs from welding in that brazing does not involve melting of the pieces being connected. Brazing differs from soldering in that soldering is performed at a lower temperature.
What is the difference between dual frequency and simultaneous dual frequency power supplies?
Both types of generators allow operators to use more than one frequency range with a single system. Operators can switch between to ranges of frequencies — medium and high, for example – on a dual system, but they cannot use both ranges of frequencies at the same time.
Simultaneous dual frequency systems allow use of both ranges at the same time. This ability is especially helpful when hardening gears. Explore further details about all of the type of induction power supplies, their frequency ranges and typical uses.
Can you explain the different types of induction coils and how they are used?
An inductor’s shape and construction style are determined predominantly by the geometry of the workpiece section to be heated, and the possibilities are infinite. See our guide to basic types of inductors and possible uses.
