Application Related

Q: How can I use an induction generator 200 feet in the air?

A: eldec has developed a generator that can be hoisted up or down into position. Read more about eldec’s hoistable solution.

Q: How can shrink fitting simplify electric motor assembly?

A: A Technical Bulletin released by eldec discusses the use of induction heating for shrink fitting components of electrical motor assemblies. Since induction heat can uniformly and gently heat the outer housing of the motor without overheating any one area, shrink-fit connections are simple to assemble and disassemble. Read more.

Q: Is it possible to prevent part fatique fractures using induction annealing?

A: Yes, it is possible. You can read more about the process in our technical bulletin Prevent Part Fatigue Fractures Using Induction Annealing.

Q: I’ve been told that switching to induction brazing is too expensive for my shop. How do I convince my boss to reconsider?

A: We hear this argument a lot. While induction brazing equipment is typically an expensive initial investment, it pays off in the long run – especially for high volume projects. In fact, there are seven reasons why investing in induction equipment is worthwhile. We’ve also gathered and debunked four additional common myths about induction brazing.

Q: Is there a way to use induction heating to quickly strip the insulated coating off of copper transformer wires?

A: Yes, you can use induction heating to strip copper transformer wires. Watch our video and see how easy it is to strip wire.

Q: Do you have videos showing induction heating in action?

A: Yes, we have a list of induction heating videos here.

Q: Which metals can be heated using induction?

A: Induction heating is a fast and highly efficient means of heating various types of electrically conductive metals.

Q: How do I reduce the risk of back and repetitive motion injuries for my workers while they are brazing our parts?

A: eldec now offers a boom arm as an option on its new, mobile power supply, the MiniMICO. The flexible arm supports and balances the weight of the coax transformer, making the induction brazing process virtually effortless.  See the video of the MiniMICO in action.

Q: I’ve considered using induction brazing, but getting to my job sites often involves traveling down gravel roads or rough and uneven dirt trails.  How do I protect my power supply?

A: eldec designed a vibration-dampening, transport cage specifically for field service teams working in rugged environments.  Learn more about how eldec’s transport cage makes it possible to use induction power supplies in challenging working conditions.

Glossary: Terms & Definitions

Q: What do you mean by _(insert term or phrase to be defined here)_?

A: Please review our Glossary for commonly used words and phrases from the induction heating industry. The link will take you to our international website, eldec.net.

Q: How does induction heating work?

A: During induction heating eddy currents are induced in an electrically conductive metallic workpiece by an alternating electromagnetic field.  These are converted into heat by magnetic loss. Or, simply put, the metal heats up due to the current flow produced in the workpiece. This enables induction heating to introduce heat directly into the workpiece rather than through connectivity from an external source such as heating with a flame or in a furnace. This process thus achieves a very high degree of efficiency. Additionally, heating can also be accomplished passing through non-conductive materials. The surrounding area is only heated indirectly. Read more about induction heating.

Q: What is the difference between induction brazing and welding?

A: Brazing is a process in which a filler metal is melted and flowed into a joint to join two or more metal items at a high temperature. Brazing differs from welding in that brazing does not involve melting of the pieces being connected. Brazing differs from soldering in that soldering is performed at a lower temperature. Explanations for additional induction heating-related terms can be found in eldec’s Glossary.

Q: Which metals can be heated using induction?

A: Electrically conductive metals can be used.  See our list.

Q: What is the difference between dual frequency and simultaneous dual frequency power supplies?

A: Both types of generators allow operators to use more than one frequency range with a single system.  Operators can switch between to ranges of frequencies — medium and high, for example — on a dual system, but they cannot use both ranges of frequencies at the same time. Simultaneous dual frequency  systems allow use of both ranges at the same time.  This ability is especially helpful when hardening gears. Read more about all of the type of induction power supplies, their frequency ranges and typical uses.

Q: Can you explain the different types of induction coils and how they are used?

A: An inductor’s shape and construction style are determined predominantly by the geometry of the workpiece section to be heated, and the possibilities are infinite. See eldec’s guide to basic types of inductors and possible uses.
