Brazing Flat Copper Parts

Do you have a project that requires joining two or more pieces of flat copper? If so, induction brazing could be your best solution for creating precise and consistent joints.  Amazingly as our video below shows, once the parts are in place, the process takes only 40 seconds at 28 kW to complete.

For this demo our technicians used a T-slot, aluminum extruded table and an ordinary metal C-clamp to hold the flat copper parts in position on top of a mica-insulated, face heating coil encased in a stationary, stainless-steel box installed into a coaxial cable. The coax was also mounted to the worktable for stability during the induction process.

To make the work simpler for the operator and less wasteful, we placed two pre-cut, brazing alloy strips (five thousandths of an inch thick) in a groove on the bottom workpiece before clamping the top piece of copper. As the induction process begins, heat starts at the bottom and flows upward, conducting into the vertical piece and brazing alloy. Once the coil reaches the optimum temperature and the alloy melts, the generator automatically turns off. The copper in the joint area immediately begins to cool, allowing the joint to solidify.

Depending on the size of your parts and the speed needed for your operation, several eldec induction power supply models are capable of a similar project. eldec’s portable and flexible MiniMICO 30 (30 kW) is perfect for manually brazing smaller parts in changing situations. Projects with larger parts than ¾” thick or requiring more speed would be better paired with and ECO LINE 50 (50 kW) or larger. Thicker parts may require a different type of coil that heats the parts from the top as well as the bottom. If you braze a large quantity of the same parts, customized clamping fixtures and automated or semi-automated setups can be designed. Both models are often in stock and can be purchased on a rent-to-own basis or purchased for immediate delivery.  Check out our list of machines in stock at our Power Supply Marketplace.

Since every project is unique, our staff will work hard for you – from project concept through design and manufacturing, equipment commissioning, trouble shooting and maintenance as well as employee training. Whether brazing manually, using turntables, moving fixtures, conveyors or a fully automated system, eldec offers a complete range of induction power supplies, induction heating coils and aftermarket services. We understand that sharing technical knowledge and hands-on experience is just as important as selling quality equipment and tools.
